NYC Jews kick off Passover by burning leavened bread

New York Jews torched leavened bread in bonfires in designated areas throughout the town Friday to mark the beginning of Passover.

The biur chametz exterior of Yetev Lev D’Satmar Synagogue in Borough Park, Brooklyn noticed the Jewish group collect to look at the custom – the place all leavened merchandise are to be burnt forward of the beginning of Passover seder at sunset.

The FDNY Engine 517 oversaw the placement, distributed fire-safety pamphlets – and extinguished the flames after the leavened merchandise had been diminished to ash.
