Hostages Season 2 Web Series Review

STORY: Instead of getting CM Khushwant Lal Handa (Dalip Tahil) killed on the operation table, retired Superintendent of Police Prithvi Singh (Ronit Bose Roy) — along with his team — kidnaps the CM for a bone marrow transplant to save his wife’s life. But this time nothing goes as per Singh’s plan, so will he still be able to save his wife?

REVIEW: ‘Hostages Season 2’ picks up from where Season 1 had left off. It shifts its attention from Dr. Anand’s family, who were held hostage by Singh and his gang in the previous season. This time around, the hostage-taker’s plan is a bit too personal — he needs the CM’s bone marrow to save his wife’s life. But nothing goes as planned because of Saba’s (Shriswara Dubey) deteriorating health conditions and they now must halt their journey and take shelter in an abandoned house (Purani Kothi) on the Delhi-Gurgaon Highway. But that’s not all, the CM’s head of security, Subramanian (Mohan Kapur), hunts the gang down, and gunshots are fired which attracts local cops’ attention. Just as things get rolling, events conspire to set up a brand-new hostage situation — will Prithvi be successful in finding a way out of this mess and getting the bone marrow transplant for his wife?

As the story picks up steam, several cast members are added to this season with each playing a pivotal role in everything that is happening both in and out of the mansion, where Singh and his gang are holed up.

Writer Nisarg Mehta has meticulously weaved in new subplots into the script and introduces three new strong female characters: Ayesha Khan (Divya Dutta), a hostage negotiator who works for the police, Shikha (Shweta Basu Prasad), a struggling journalist who smells a rat in a so-called open-and-shut Imam’s (Avijit Dutt) death case and Isha Andrews (Shibani Dandekar), a corporate bigwig tied up in a conspiracy. In addition to this, Rajiv (Dino Morea), a cold-hearted assassin, who is tailing Prithvi to get to Handa, is the bad boy in Hostages 2.

Sudhir Mishra has once again donned the director’s hat for this series along with Sachin Mamta Krishn. Based on an Israeli TV show by the same name, this 12-part series has no dull moments owing to the ample twists-and-turns that keep the momentum going. The show is engaging and keeps its audience hooked while the battle between the both sides are on — will the cops overpower these kidnappers or Prithvi & Co. will have it their way?

Since there is a lot happening in Hostages 2, the inclusion of some of these characters and them withering away with time was neither required nor explained to its full extent. There are, though, enough hints peppered throughout to kind of give an idea of how things might be resolved. Altogether, too much time is spent on the hostage-handling situation in the first few episodes, which, in turn, stagnates the flow of events. However, this crime-thriller picks up pace towards the end of this season but the sheer complexity of the plot leads us to many open-ended questions and the viewers deserve closure.

Leading the pack is Ronit Bose Roy, who reprises his role as retired Superintendent of Police who evokes pith and pathos with his portrayal of Singh. Unlike season 1, Saba’s character plays a greater role in taking the narrative ahead this time. Dino Morea as Rajiv essays the role of a sociopath, but he doesn’t come across as someone with ample coldness in his heart. Divya Dutta is the show-stealer here who outshines all the new additions to the ‘hostages’ family this season. Other cast members like Dalip Tahil, Aashim Gulati, Faezeh Jalali, Amit Sail, Kanwaljit Singh, and Shweta Basu Prasad lend good support to this crime saga and help push the story forward.

In conclusion, whether ‘Hostages’ will be renewed for a third installment or not is a question which only the makers can answer, but it sure makes for a gripping watch.
