Southwest apologizes for delays, cancellations; blames technology issues

Southwest Airways flights have been delayed and canceled early Saturday morning. 

In a press release to Fox Enterprise, the airline cited “intermittent efficiency points following routine in a single day upkeep of a few of [its] backend expertise.”

“We provide heartfelt apologies to our clients for any inconvenience, and gratitude to our staff who’re working diligently to make it as much as them,” the airline wrote. “We’ll proceed to replace clients whose journey with us right now is likely to be delayed as results of the now-resolved points.”

Flight tracker FlightAware confirmed greater than a thousand delayed flights on Southwest shortly after 9 a.m. ET, with 179 cancellations. 

Passengers reacted to the adjustments on social media, responding to a Friday April Idiot’s Day tweet from Southwest. 

“You desire a joke? Bag charges,” the @SouthwestAir account said

“Sort of dangerous style to make a Twitter joke when seemingly each flight right now is delayed,” Fox 61 meteorologist Ryan Breton replied

Others shared tales of prolonged clients service calls, double cancellations and exorbitant airfare. 

Airline ticket costs have risen resulting from elevated journey and already sky-high gasoline prices have been pushed additional up by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

KPRC 2 in Houston, Texas reported Saturday that the supply of delays was a “deliberate system outage” and {that a} spokesperson for Houston Airports instructed the station the airways system was down for 2 hours, beginning at 4 a.m. native time. 

North Carolina’s WNCN said the “nationwide system failure” had brought on delays out of Raleigh-Durham Worldwide Airport.

Fox Enterprise’ Edward Lawrence was at Ronald Reagan Washington Nationwide Airport in Washington, D.C., and tweeted concerning the problem. 

“Replace: Gate Brokers saying that the @SouthwestAir system is again up. They’re beginning to try to meet up with bag checks and boarding,” he wrote at 6:57 a.m. ET.
