In a letter to US Division of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, the North American Meat Institute stated surging costs have been a results of a nationwide labor scarcity — not consolidation of the meat trade.

“The Administration can’t ignore the elemental rules of provide and demand,” Anna Potts of NAMI stated.

“People are experiencing firsthand what the Secretary refuses to acknowledge, the results of COVID and lack of labor are hurting shoppers, and nothing proposed by the Secretary of Agriculture on the construction of the meat and poultry trade will assist households struggling to pay for groceries.”

Equally, previous to the press briefing, no White Home or USDA workers contacted the regulated trade to lift issues or talk about the difficulty.”

The principle challenge within the meat trade, she insisted, is identical downside roiling different industries like eating places and motels: a labor scarcity.

“Sadly, on the press convention the problem of labor shortages was by no means
acknowledged,” Potts wrote.

“The pandemic appears to be the car spawning new dangerous concepts, and
resurrecting different dangerous concepts, seemingly with out recognizing financial realities and
unintended penalties,” she added.

“Certainly, not one of the proposals superior on the press briefing will alleviate the buyer value will increase the administration seeks to
deal with.”
